Uganda Entry Requirements for Safari Travellers

Uganda, known as the Pearl of Africa, is fully open for safari travel through Entebbe International Airport. Travellers can now plan gorilla trekking safaris, wildlife tours, and adventure holidays with ease. While Uganda initially enforced a strict lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, the country has since reopened its borders and tourism activities have resumed across all major national parks. Today, travel to Uganda is straightforward, with clear entry requirements, visa procedures and airport guidelines in place. Whether you are planning a gorilla safari, wildlife tour or combined East Africa itinerary, this guide explains what to expect before arrival, at the airport and during your safari.

Entebbe Airport Opening and Entry Timeline

Uganda reopened Entebbe International Airport to international travellers in October 2020, allowing scheduled flights and tourism to resume. Today, the airport operates as the main entry point for safari travellers. It connects directly to major hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and Amsterdam, making Uganda accessible for long-haul travellers. Most visitors begin their journey with an overnight stay in Entebbe or Kampala before continuing to national parks.

Uganda Entry Requirements for International Travellers

COVID-19 testing is no longer a requirement for most travellers arriving in Uganda. Visitors are not required to present a COVID-19 test certificate on arrival at Entebbe Airport. However, travellers should always check with their airline and destination country for any requirements that may apply on departure from Uganda.

  • Visa approval letter

Yellow Fever Requirement: A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Uganda. This is checked at Entebbe Airport on arrival and is mandatory for all travellers coming from most countries.

What to Expect at Entebbe Airport on Arrival

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, travellers proceed through immigration, baggage claim and customs. The process is generally smooth, but it is advisable to plan your first night in Entebbe or Kampala before starting your safari. This allows time to rest after long international flights. For departures, travellers are advised to arrive at least 3 to 4 hours before flight time to allow for check-in and security procedures.

Health and Safety Measures During Your Safari

Health and safety remain a priority during Uganda safaris. Lodges, guides and safari vehicles follow high standards to ensure a comfortable and secure experience. Travellers are advised to carry personal essentials such as travel insurance, medications and basic hygiene items. Your guide will also assist with logistics and safety throughout the journey. Uganda’s safari destinations are well-managed, and visitors can travel confidently across the country.

Safari Vehicle Experience and Comfort Safari vehicles in Uganda are designed for comfort, safety and wildlife viewing. Most are 4×4 vehicles with pop-up roofs, allowing clear views during game drives. Depending on your group size, you may travel privately or share a vehicle. Smaller groups offer more space and a more personalised safari experience, especially for photography and wildlife viewing. Your driver guide ensures smooth travel across different terrains, from savannah parks to forest reserves.
