Sasa Trail

6 Day Mount Elgon Trek on the Sasa Trail Uganda

This 6-day Mount Elgon trek takes you to Wagagai Peak on the Sasa Trail, the most direct summit route in Mount Elgon National Park. The trip combines two road transfer days with four mountain trekking days, making it a strong option for hikers who want a shorter summit program in Uganda. From the trailhead at Budadiri, the route climbs steeply through forest and bamboo before opening into heath, moorland, and the broad volcanic landscape near the summit. Wagagai Peak stands at 4,321 metres and sits on one of Africa’s largest volcanic calderas, giving this trek a very different character from other East African mountain climbs.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Mbale, Mount Elgon Region

At 7 am, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kampala and begin the journey to eastern Uganda for your Mount Elgon trek. Along the way, you may make short stopovers at Ssezibwa Falls and the Nile, depending on timing and road conditions. The drive gives you time to settle into the trip before the mountain hike begins the following day. You will arrive in Mbale in the afternoon, check in at your hotel, and have time to relax, reorganise your hiking gear, and prepare for the trek briefing. Overnight at Protea Hotel Mbale.

5 Days Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mburo Safari

Day 2: Transfer to Budadiri and Trek to Sasa Camp, 2,900m

After breakfast, transfer to Budadiri and report to the park headquarters for registration, briefing, and final trek preparations. Here, you will meet the mountain crew, including porters, cooks, and park rangers, before starting your hike. The trek begins at about 1,250 metres and is the steepest ascent day on the Sasa Trail. One of the most talked-about sections is the Wall of Death, a steep climb that was once negotiated using ropes, but now has sturdy staircases installed by Uganda Wildlife Authority for improved safety. Above this section, the trail continues through dense forest and the baboon zone, with steady climbing as you gain altitude. Expect a demanding day with strong elevation gain before reaching Sasa Camp at 2,900 metres. Dinner and overnight at Sasa Camp.

Day 3: Trek from Sasa Camp to Mude Camp, Summit Base Camp

After breakfast at camp, continue the hike from Sasa Camp to Mude Camp, the main summit base camp on Mount Elgon. This day is shorter than the previous one, but it is still important for altitude gain and acclimatisation. As you leave the lower forest behind, the vegetation begins to open up, and the landscape changes into higher mountain terrain. The trail gradually climbs by about 600 metres, giving you more expansive views and a stronger sense of the mountain environment. On arrival at Mude Camp, take time to rest, rehydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt the following morning. An early night here is important, as the next day is the longest and most physically demanding of the trek. Overnight at Mude Camp.

Day 4: Summit Wagagai Peak, 4,321m, Return to Mude Camp

Summit Wagagai PeakAfter an early breakfast, begin your summit hike through the moorland zone towards Wagagai Peak, the highest point on Mount Elgon at 4,321 metres. This is the main summit day and one of the most rewarding parts of the trek. The route crosses open high-altitude terrain with wide views across the volcanic landscape of Mount Elgon. Compared to sharper mountain peaks, the summit area here feels broad, with a unique highland atmosphere. The round trip from Mude Camp to Wagagai Peak and back usually takes about 8 to 9 hours, with an altitude gain of over 800 metres. After spending time at the summit, descend back to Mude Camp for rest, dinner, and overnight. Overnight at Mude Camp.

Day 5: Descend from Mude Camp to Budadiri, Transfer to Mbale

After breakfast, begin your descent from Mude Camp back down the Sasa Trail towards Budadiri. The return hike is faster than the ascent, but the steep sections still require care, especially in wet conditions. As you descend, the landscape gradually changes from open high-altitude terrain back into forested sections. On arrival at Budadiri, meet your driver and transfer to Mbale for a well-earned overnight stay. Overnight at Protea Hotel.

Day 6: Transfer from Mbale to Kampala or Entebbe

After breakfast, depart Mbale and drive back to Kampala or Entebbe. The journey takes most of the day, and arrival is expected in the afternoon, depending on traffic and your drop-off point. For travelers with onward flights, airport transfer can be arranged according to your schedule. This marks the end of your 6-day Mount Elgon trek on the Sasa Trail.
