Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, Scenic Transfer and Lodge Stay

afternoon boat safari on Lake IhemaAfter breakfast at around 9 am, meet your driver guide and begin the drive north from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze region. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills, farmland, and small towns, giving you a clear sense of why the country is often referred to as the land of a thousand hills. Arrive in Musanze around midday and continue to your lodge located near the park. After check-in, spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for the hike the next day. You can use this time to check your gear, arrange your packed lunch with the lodge, and take a short walk around the property if available. Dinner and overnight near Volcanoes National Park. Overnight options: Budget: Kinigi Guest House, Mid-range: Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Luxury: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge / Virunga Lodge, Exclusive luxury: Bisate Lodge

Day 2, Mount Bisoke Crater Lake Hike and Return to Kigali

Wake up early, have breakfast, and leave with a packed lunch prepared by your lodge. Transfer to the park headquarters for registration and briefing, which usually starts early in the morning. After the briefing, drive to the trailhead, which is about 30 minutes away, and begin your guided hike with ranger support. The hike takes you through forested slopes, bamboo zones, and higher altitude vegetation as you ascend Mount Bisoke. The trek usually takes about 5 to 7 hours in total, depending on pace and trail conditions, with around 4 hours to reach the summit and 2 to 3 hours to descend. The trail can be steep, muddy, and physically demanding, especially during wet conditions, so it is important to present it as a moderate to challenging hike rather than an easy walk. At the summit, you will reach the crater lake, one of the main highlights of the hike. Take time to rest, enjoy the views, and have your packed lunch before starting the descent. Conditions at the top can be cold, wet, and foggy, so proper clothing is essential. While wildlife such as birds and forest species may be seen along the trail, the main focus of the hike is the volcanic landscape and crater lake experience. After descending, return to the starting point and transfer back to Kigali, arriving later in the afternoon or early evening, depending on timing. End of your 2-day Mount Bisoke hike.
