Uganda continues to grow as a tourism destination known for wildlife safaris, gorilla trekking and adventure holidays. Beyond traditional safari tourism, the country is also exploring new travel sectors such as sports tourism, especially golf tourism. Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Golf Union Partnership

The partnership between Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Golf Union was officially launched on 18 February 2019 at Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, Kampala. The collaboration aimed to position Uganda not only as a wildlife and gorilla trekking destination, but also as a golf safari destination for international travellers. At the time of the launch, the Uganda Golf Tour was expected to begin in March 2019 and help showcase the country’s different golf courses across several regions. Uganda currently has a mix of 18-hole and 9-hole golf courses located in cities, lakeside areas and safari regions. What makes Uganda different from many golf destinations is the ability to combine golf with gorilla trekking, wildlife viewing, cultural experiences and nature holidays within the same itinerary.

Golf Courses Included in Uganda Golf Safaris

Uganda’s golf courses are spread across different regions, allowing travellers to include golf rounds at several stages of their safari. Courses in Kampala and Entebbe are convenient for arrival and departure days, while others can be combined with wildlife parks and gorilla trekking routes. For example, Entebbe Golf Club is located near Lake Victoria and close to Uganda Wildlife Education Centre and Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Uganda Golf Club in Kitante offers a city golf experience within Kampala, while golf near Kihihi provides easier access to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking. Golfers visiting eastern Uganda may also combine golf experiences with Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls and Jinja, where visitors can enjoy the Source of the Nile and other adventure activities.

According to Uganda Golf Union leadership, golf and tourism work closely together because golf travellers often spend several days at a destination. Unlike short recreational activities, golf holidays usually involve accommodation, transport, dining and sightseeing experiences around the golf course. This creates opportunities for hotels, safari lodges, restaurants, tour operators and transport providers. Golf travellers are also more likely to extend their stay to include wildlife safaris, city tours, shopping or cultural experiences. For Uganda, this creates a strong tourism advantage because many golf courses are located near major attractions such as Lake Victoria, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mount Elgon and the Source of the Nile.

Combine Golf with Gorilla Trekking and Wildlife Safaris

One of the strongest selling points of Uganda golf safaris is the ability to combine golf with gorilla trekking and wildlife experiences. Travellers can enjoy rounds of golf before continuing to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for mountain gorilla trekking or Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and boat cruises. This combination appeals strongly to luxury travellers and mixed interest groups. One guest may enjoy golf while another participates in birding, spa treatments, photography or safari activities. Uganda’s relatively compact geography also makes it easier to connect golf destinations with safari parks in one journey.
