With now the good road networks, easy communication within the country and also security Rwanda has a number of must visit places. Before you visit Rwanda you will ask yourself, what are the Must visit places in Rwanda? In 1994, Rwanda was faced with a never forgotten tragedy which involved a fight between tribes that was the Hutu and Tusti’s. Many people where killed and inorder to avoid history repeating it’s self the government decided to create genocide memorials and open them for public viewing as a way of healing and also to remind themselves never to allow this to be reapeated again. Therefore Rwanda now has a number of genocide memorials that you can visit, including the Kigali genocide memorial, Kigali Genocide Memorial Center. Murambi Genocide Memorial. Nyamata Genocide Memorial. Nyanza Genocide Memorial. Bisesero genocide memorial and Ntarama genocide memorial. To mention but a few. Most of these are closer to Kigali and can be visited in just a day.  

Volcanoes national parkVolcanoes National park.

Volcanoes national park is not only a home to one of the most sought after animal in the world the gorillas, but also home to a number of other primates including golden monkeys. The park is home to some of the worlds remaining mountain gorillas and therefore, people travel from every corner of the world to join some of the gorilla safaris. The park has over 10 groups or gorilla families that you can track. This is a park where the Silverbacks meet the golden backs. In other words, it is also home to groups of golden monkeys.

For mountain hikers, there are two Volcanoes that you can hike in Volcanoes national park. These include Karisimbi and Bisoke.  If you are in Rwanda, you can spare a day to do all these activities.

Nyungwe National Park.

The oldest forest in Africa Nyungwe forest is home to over 10 primates’ species to include chimpanzees, Black and white colobus monkeys and so much more. The park is excellent for nature walks, chimpanzee tracking and also has a trail over the canopy and one can do a  Canopy walk.

The drive to the park takes 4 hours but along the route, one can stop at the Kings’ palace for an insight into the cultures of the Rwandans. You can also stop by the natural history museum. We recommend a minimum of two days for Nyungwe national park.

Akagera wildlife park.

Akagera today is the home of the Big Five in Rwanda and the park is just 2 and half hours away from Kigali the Capital. Excellent for wildlife safaris, you can also take a boat ride on some of the lakes like Lake Ihema and stay in some of the unique lodges like Ruzizi tented lodge or Akagera game lodge. Visit Akagera national park for wildlife like lions, elephants, Bufafloes, Rhinos, Giraffes and so much more.

Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu RwandaLake Kivu lies between DR.Congo and Rwanda and most notably is that it is one of Africa’s great lakes lying in the Albertine rift on the western branch of the East African Rift . The lake also connects to Lake Taganyika through river ruzizi. In Rwanda there are 3 bustling towns along the Lake which you can opt to visit. These include; Gisenyi ( Rubavu), Kibuye(Karongi) and Cyangungu (Rusizi). Gisenyi is the most popular of them all, and is lined with a great number of international hotels. Though old but they offer excellent cocktails for great evenings.  Those who would wish to relax after their gorilla safari, Gisenyi beach is less that an hour away from Volcanoes national park.
