Rare Gorilla Birth Seen During Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Ranger Guide Gloria Asasira Shares a Rare Gorilla Birth Story

According to ranger guide Gloria Asasira, the trekking group had been assigned to the Habinyanja gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After the morning briefing, the visitors travelled to the trekking starting point while trackers moved ahead early into the forest to locate the gorilla family. The group trekked for about twenty-five minutes before reaching the gorillas. As the visitors prepared themselves by wearing face masks, adjusting cameras and resting briefly, Gloria noticed that one adult female gorilla was behaving differently from the rest of the family. While other gorillas continued feeding, the female appeared uncomfortable and showed signs of labour. Gloria carefully informed the visitors about what might happen. The labour continued for approximately twenty-five minutes before the baby gorilla was finally born. According to the ranger guide, the mother immediately cleaned the newborn, handled the umbilical cord and consumed the placenta before cleaning the surrounding leaves and vegetation. During the process, the other members of the gorilla family stopped feeding and remained nearby. One gorilla stayed close to the mother throughout the birth process, which left visitors describing the behaviour as similar to a human midwife assisting during delivery.

How Gorilla Families React to a Newborn Baby

After the birth, the ranger guide observed calm and curious behaviour from the rest of the gorilla family. Group members slowly approached the mother and newborn, appearing interested in the new infant while remaining protective and peaceful around the pair. Gloria explained that moments like these remind visitors how social mountain gorillas are. Gorilla families depend heavily on cooperation, communication and protection within the group. Watching family members gather around a newborn often creates a strong emotional experience for visitors because many behaviours appear surprisingly similar to those seen in human families. The newborn was later seen breastfeeding normally before the trekking group quietly left the forest under ranger guidance.

According to the ranger guide, very little evidence remained by the following day because the gorillas had cleaned the surrounding vegetation and moved on with the family group.
