How to Get to Bwindi for Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi Forest National Park is one of Uganda’s most visited safari destinations because it is home to mountain gorillas and offers some of the best gorilla trekking experiences in Africa. The park is located in southwestern Uganda and can be reached by road from Kampala, Entebbe, Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kigali in Rwanda. Travellers can also fly from Entebbe to nearby airstrips before continuing by road to their lodge. Before choosing your route, it is important to know which gorilla trekking sector your permit belongs to. Bwindi has four main sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector has different access routes, nearby towns, lodges and airstrip options. Booking accommodation in the wrong sector can cause long transfers before your trek. Below is a clear breakdown of how to get to Bwindi Forest National Park by road and by air, including the best routes for Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors and Access Points

Bwindi Forest National Park has four main gorilla trekking sectors. These are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Your assigned sector depends on the gorilla permit booked for you, and it directly affects where you should stay, which route you should use and which airstrip is most convenient. Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi and is one of the most established trekking sectors. Ruhija is on the eastern side and can be accessed through Kabale or from Buhoma. Rushaga and Nkuringo are in the southern part of Bwindi and are commonly accessed through Kisoro or from Kigali via the Cyanika border.

How to Get to Buhoma and Ruhija Sectors by Road

Buhoma and Ruhija are usually accessed from Kampala or Entebbe through western Uganda. The drive can take most of the day depending on traffic, road conditions, stops and weather. Travellers should expect a long but scenic journey through towns, hills, farmlands and rural landscapes.

Kampala to Buhoma via Kabale and Kanungu: This route follows the Kampala to Kabale highway for about 5 to 6 hours before continuing through Kanungu and Kanyantorogo towards Buhoma. The second part of the journey can take about 4 to 5 hours depending on road conditions. The total driving time is usually about 9 to 11 hours. This route is useful for travellers heading to Buhoma, especially when the itinerary is built around northern Bwindi.

Kampala to Buhoma via Ntungamo and Queen Elizabeth National Park: This route is often more convenient for travellers combining Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth National Park. It includes both paved road sections and unpaved marram roads, with a total distance of about 390 kilometres. This route works well for itineraries that include wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Ishasha sector and gorilla trekking in Buhoma.

Kabale to Ruhija: Ruhija can be accessed through Kabale using an unpaved and rocky route. This section is about 95 kilometres from Kabale and requires careful driving, especially during rainy seasons. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended because some sections can be rough, slippery or slow. Ruhija can also connect to Buhoma, but travellers should confirm road conditions before using this route.

Flights to Buhoma and Ruhija Sectors of Bwindi

Flights to Buhoma and Ruhija Sectors of Bwindi

Travellers who want to reduce long driving time can fly from Entebbe to airstrips near Bwindi. Buhoma and Ruhija are commonly served by Kihihi Airstrip, and some routes may also use Kayonza Airstrip depending on flight schedules and the final lodge location. After landing, travellers still need a road transfer from the airstrip to their lodge. This transfer usually takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the lodge, road conditions and sector. Flying is a good option for travellers with limited time, luxury safari guests, older travellers or visitors who want to avoid a full-day road journey from Kampala or Entebbe.

How to Get to Rushaga and Nkuringo Sectors by Road

Rushaga and Nkuringo are located in the southern part of Bwindi Forest National Park. These sectors are commonly accessed through Mbarara, Kabale and Kisoro when travelling from Kampala or Entebbe. The drive from Kampala to Kisoro usually takes about 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic, weather and stopovers. From Kisoro, travellers should add about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach either Rushaga or Nkuringo, depending on the lodge and road conditions. Rushaga and Nkuringo can also be accessed from Kigali, Rwanda, via the Cyanika Border. The drive from Kigali to Kisoro usually takes about 4 to 5 hours, followed by another 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the trekking sector. This route is popular for travellers who want a shorter road transfer to southern Bwindi.

Flights to Rushaga and Nkuringo Sectors of Bwindi

The southern sectors of Rushaga and Nkuringo are served by Kisoro Airstrip. Travellers can fly from Entebbe to Kisoro and then continue by road to their lodge or trekking starting point. The road transfer from Kisoro Airstrip to Rushaga or Nkuringo usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the lodge and road conditions. Because Bwindi is a hilly forest region, travellers should always allow enough time between flights, transfers and trekking schedules. Flights are useful for travellers with limited time, but road transfers are still needed after landing.

How to Get to Bwindi From Kigali Rwanda

Travelling from Kigali to Bwindi is one of the shortest road options for visitors going to Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors. The route normally passes through the Cyanika Border into Kisoro before continuing to the southern part of Bwindi. This route is popular because the drive from Kigali to Kisoro usually takes about 4 to 5 hours, which can be shorter than driving from Kampala or Entebbe. However, travellers should confirm border requirements, visa arrangements, passport validity and travel documents before choosing this route. Kigali is less convenient for Buhoma and Ruhija compared to Rushaga and Nkuringo, so the trekking sector should always be confirmed before planning this route.

Combining Bwindi With Queen Elizabeth and Kibale

Travellers can combine Bwindi Forest National Park with other Uganda safari destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Lake Mburo National Park. A popular route combines Kibale Forest for chimpanzee tracking, Queen Elizabeth National Park for wildlife and boat safaris, and Bwindi for gorilla trekking. This route can work well in about 7 to 10 days depending on pace, accommodation and activities. Bwindi can also be added to longer Uganda and Rwanda itineraries for travellers who want gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, wildlife safaris and cultural experiences in one journey.
