Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Gorilla Safaris

Rwanda is one of the best tourism destinations in East Africa because it offers a wide range of experiences in a compact country. Visitors can enjoy mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, savannah wildlife safaris in Akagera National Park, chimpanzee tracking and canopy walks in Nyungwe Forest National Park, cultural tours, Kigali city experiences and relaxation around Lake Kivu. The best time to visit Rwanda depends on what you want to do. Gorilla trekking, wildlife safaris, hiking, birding and photography can all be affected by the weather, especially in forested and mountainous areas. Rwanda can be visited throughout the year, but each season offers a different travel experience.

Rwanda Weather and Travel Seasons

When planning a Rwanda safari, climate is one of the most important factors to consider. Rwanda experiences both dry and rainy seasons, and the best time depends on whether you are visiting for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, wildlife safaris, bird watching, hiking or city tours. Rwanda lies south of the Equator and has a tropical highland climate. Because much of the country sits at a fairly high altitude, temperatures are generally moderate. Kigali has an average temperature of around 21°C, while forested and mountainous areas such as Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park can feel cooler, especially in the morning and evening.

March to May, Rwanda’s Long Rainy Season

March to May is Rwanda’s long rainy season, with heavy rainfall in many parts of the country. Forest trails can become muddy and slippery, especially in areas used for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking and nature walks. This season may be more challenging for travellers visiting Volcanoes National Park or Nyungwe Forest National Park because trekking conditions can be harder. Roads in remote areas may also take longer to navigate, especially after heavy rain. However, this season still has advantages. The landscapes are green, photography can be beautiful, and there may be fewer visitors compared to peak dry season months. Travellers who choose this period should carry waterproof boots, a rain jacket, gloves and suitable trekking clothing.

June to Mid September, Best Dry Season for Rwanda Safaris

From June to mid-September, Rwanda experiences its long dry season. This is one of the best times to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, wildlife safaris and hiking. The trails are usually less slippery, making treks in Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park easier than during the rainy months. Game drives in Akagera National Park are also more comfortable because roads are easier to use and wildlife viewing can be more rewarding. Even during the dry season, travellers should still carry a raincoat when visiting forested areas. Mountain and rainforest environments can receive rain at any time.

Why the Dry Season Is Good for Hiking and Wildlife Viewing

Travellers who enjoy hiking often prefer the dry season because trails are easier to manage. This is useful for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe and hiking routes such as Mount Bisoke or other highland trails. The dry season is also good for wildlife safaris in Akagera National Park. As water becomes less available in some areas, animals often move closer to water sources, making them easier to find during game drives. For first-time visitors, June to September is one of the safest recommendations because it gives better overall conditions for most Rwanda activities.

October to November, Short Rainy Season in Rwanda

October to November is Rwanda’s short rainy season. Rainfall returns during this period, but it is usually not as long as the March to May rainy season. Forest trekking can become muddy and slippery, but this season also has advantages. Because food is more available in the forest, gorillas and other primates may move to lower areas, which can sometimes reduce trekking time. This period can work well for travellers who want fewer crowds, greener scenery and better availability compared to the peak dry season

Best Time for Birding and Photography in Rwanda

The rainy season can be very rewarding for bird watchers. During this time, plants and trees flower, insects become more active and many birds are easier to spot. Photographers may also enjoy travelling during or towards the end of the rainy season because the landscapes are green, the skies are dramatic and the forest scenery looks fresh. This can be especially beautiful around Nyungwe Forest National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu. For birding safaris, the wet season and shoulder months can offer strong value, especially for travellers who do not mind occasional rain

Can You Visit Rwanda All Year Round

Rwanda can be visited at any time of the year. The dry seasons are best for easier trekking, hiking and wildlife viewing, while the rainy seasons are good for birding, green scenery, photography and fewer crowds. For gorilla trekking and first-time safaris, June to September and December to February are usually the strongest months. For flexible travellers, March to May and October to November can still offer a rewarding experience with the right preparation.
