7 Days Eastern and Northern Uganda Cultural Safari
This 7 days eastern and northern Uganda cultural safari is designed for travellers who want a deeper look at Uganda beyond the standard wildlife circuit. The route moves from Jinja and Mbale into Teso and Karamoja before finishing at Sipi Falls, combining cultural encounters, community visits, landscapes, and historical sites across eastern and northeastern Uganda. It is a strong option for travellers who want a more people-focused Uganda itinerary. Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, Transfer from Kampala to Jinja and Mbale, Source of the Nile, Busoga cultural visit
In the morning, right after breakfast, you will depart Kampala and drive to Jinja, a journey of about 2 hours. On arrival, visit the Source of the Nile and learn more about the historical and geographical importance of this landmark. After that, continue to the king’s palace of Busoga for a cultural visit. Here, learn more about the traditions, social structure, and leadership of the Basoga people, including the role of their reigning king. After lunch in Jinja, continue the journey east to Mbale. If time allows, enjoy a short walk through town or relax at the lodge after the drive. Overnight: Budget Wash and Wills Hotel, Mid-range Mbale Resort or Protea Hotel
Day 2, Transfer to Teso Region, fishermen’s village, Nyero rock paintings
After breakfast, depart for the Teso region. On arrival, visit a local fishermen’s village to learn more about lakeside livelihoods, daily routines, fishing practices, and local community life. This gives the day a living cultural angle, not just a stop-and-go experience. Later, continue to the Nyero rock paintings, one of Uganda’s most important historical and archaeological sites. Spend time learning about the meaning of the paintings, the rock shelter setting, and the heritage linked to the area. After the visit, continue to your hotel and relax for the evening. Budget Kumi Hotel, Mid-range 7 Eleven Hotel
Day 3, Transfer to Moroto, Karamoja Museum, Ateker Cultural Centre
At 7 am, depart for Moroto. This is a longer transfer through northeastern Uganda, with changing landscapes as you move toward the Karamoja region. On arrival in Moroto, have lunch and later visit the Karamoja Museum and the Ateker Cultural Centre to learn more about the history, migration, material culture, and identity of the people of Karamoja and the wider Ateker communities. In the evening, go for a guided walk around Moroto town or the surrounding foothills to experience the atmosphere of the region and observe daily life before returning for dinner. Overnight Kara-Tunga Campsite or tents
Day 4, Mount Moroto hike, Tepeth community visit
This morning, set out for a guided hike on Mount Moroto. The hike gives you scenic views of the surrounding landscape and a closer look at the natural setting of the Karamoja region. Along the slopes of Mount Moroto, visit the Tepeth community and learn more about their way of life, settlement patterns, and traditions. The Tepeth are one of the indigenous communities associated with the mountain area. During the visit, you may see traditional homesteads and hear more about how the community has adapted to life in this rugged environment. After the visit, return for rest and overnight.
Day 5, Karamoja cycling or motorbike tour, cultural village ceremony, cattle camp
This morning, go for a motorbike or mountain bike tour through the Karamoja region for a more active way to explore local communities and the surrounding landscapes. This experience allows you to move through settlements, interact with local people, and observe daily life more closely than from a vehicle. Later in the afternoon, attend a cultural village ceremony with music, dance, and community interaction before continuing to a traditional cattle camp. At the cattle camp, learn more about the importance of livestock in Karamojong life, including social status, livelihood, and identity. Camp overnight in the area for a more immersive cultural experience.

Day 6, Transfer to Sipi Falls, Sebei community and caves
At 9 am, drive to Sipi Falls in the Mount Elgon region. On arrival, go for a guided nature walk around Sipi Falls and enjoy the scenery, local farms, and viewpoints in the area. After some time to relax, continue with a visit to the Sebei community. The visit helps travellers understand the history, beliefs, and changing cultural practices of the Sebei community, including traditions that are now being left behind. Later, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight. Budget Sipi Bandas, Mid-range Sipi River Lodge
Day 7, Return to Kampala
At 8 am, drive back to Kampala. The drive takes several hours, and you will arrive in the afternoon. Depending on timing, you may stop for a short break or lunch along the way before continuing to the city. This marks the end of your 7 days eastern and Northern Uganda cultural tour.
