Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Kisoro, Southwestern Uganda
At 8 am, after breakfast, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kampala and begin the journey to Kisoro in southwestern Uganda. This is a full travel day, allowing you to transition from the city into the mountainous Virunga region. Along the way, you will make a stop at the Equator for photos and a short break, followed by a lunch stop in Mbarara. The drive then continues through rolling hills and rural landscapes before reaching Kisoro in the early evening. On arrival, check in at your lodge, relax, and prepare for the volcano hikes starting the next day. This evening can also be used for a short briefing with your guide and final gear check. Overnight at Travellers Rest Kisoro, with an upgrade option available at Gahinga Gorilla Lodge.
Day 2: Hike Mount Gahinga, Bamboo Zone and Crater Experience

After an early breakfast, transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters for registration and briefing before starting your hike. Today’s hike is Mount Gahinga, the smallest of the three volcanoes in the park, rising to about 3,474 metres. The trail passes through a bamboo forest and continues into higher vegetation zones with giant lobelias and unique afro-alpine plants. As you approach the summit, the landscape opens up to reveal a swamp-filled crater, one of the defining features of Mount Gahinga. Wildlife sightings may include golden monkeys moving through the bamboo sections. The round trip takes up to 6 hours depending on pace. After descending, return to the trailhead and transfer back to your lodge in Kisoro. Overnight at your lodge
Day 3: Hike Mount Sabyinyo, Ridge Climb Experience
After breakfast, return to the park for your hike on Mount Sabyinyo. This is one of the most dramatic hikes in the Virunga range, known for its rugged ridges and steep sections. The trail follows a series of ridges leading toward the summit, with some sections requiring the use of ladders to navigate steep terrain. The hike takes about 8 hours round trip and covers approximately 14 kilometres. At the summit ridges, hikers are rewarded with views across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making this one of the most unique summit experiences in East Africa. After the hike, descend back to the starting point and return to Kisoro for an overnight
Day 4: Hike Mount Muhabura, the highest peak in Mgahinga

After breakfast, begin your hike on Mount Muhabura, the highest of the three volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, standing at about 4,127 metres. This is the most physically demanding hike of the itinerary. The trail is steep throughout, requiring endurance and steady pacing. The ascent passes through forest and alpine vegetation before reaching the summit. On a clear day, the summit offers wide views across Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the Virunga volcano chain, Lake Edward, and distant mountain ranges including the Rwenzori Mountains. The hike takes around 8 hours round trip, covering about 12 kilometres. After descending, return to your lodge in Kisoro for the night.
Day 5: Transfer from Kisoro to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, depart Kisoro and begin the return journey to Kampala. The drive includes a stop for lunch along the way and passes through scenic southwestern Uganda. Arrival in Kampala is expected later in the day, depending on traffic and stopovers. For international travelers, onward transfer to Entebbe can be arranged based on your flight schedule. End of your 5-day Mgahinga volcano hiking tour.
