Gazetted in 2002, Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is located on the western side of the Albertine Rift Valley, close to the shores of Lake Albert. The reserve offers wide views of the lake and, on clear days, the Blue Mountains of Congo across the water. This setting makes Kabwoya one of the more scenic wildlife reserves in western Uganda. Kabwoya was established as part of efforts to control wildlife hunting and protect the area’s natural resources. Together with the Kaiso Tonya Community Wildlife Area, it forms the wider Kabwoya Kaiso Wildlife Management Area, which covers about 194 sq km. Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve covers around 87 sq km, while Kaiso Tonya Community Wildlife Area covers about 107 sq km.
