Bisoke is among the popular Virunga mountain ranges along the Rwanda-Congo boarder therefore shared by both Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park and Congo’s Virunga national park. It’s summit is however in Rwanda occupied by crater lakes and s mall forest. There are different trails  and the shortest is the one leading Ngezi crater lake.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park.

At 9am after your breakfast, drive together with your guide to the north parts of Rwanda going through sprawling highlands with extremely  beautiful sceneries. Rwanda’s tenure is the reason why commonly referred to as the land of a thousand hills. Once in Musanze near volcanoes national park, drive to proceed to your hotel.  You will have an afternoon to relax when you get to the lodge and just enjoy the beauty that surrounds the hotel.  Dine and overnight will be at; Budget ; Kinigi Guest House, moderate ; Five volcanoes Hotel,  Luxury ; Sabyinyo silverback lodge or Virunga Lodge, Exclusive Luxury; Bisate Lodge. 

Day 2: Hike Mt. Bisoke to the Crater Lake.

Have breakfast early and you will carry packed lunch depending what the lodge will provide that day. You need to be at the park headquarters for briefing before 7.00am for registration. At 8 am, you will start the hike with ranger guides who will be assigned to you that day to escort and guide you along the trails with other hikers.  The ranger will give you the important information you may need before you start the hike which starts from about 30 minutes away from the briefing point.  You can always get porters if you need one to carry your backpack at an extra fee of course.

When you get to the top, you can explore the crater lakes, one at the summit and the other called Ngezi located about 11kms away from the summit. Usually there is a lot of fog and extremely cold so you should be prepare for such a weather.

The surrounding is covered by a small forest which is s home to a number of different bird species. The hike takes about 6 hours depending on the fitness of hikers which means, you need 4 hours to ascend and 2 hours to descend. The shortest trail however takes 5 hours in total

This is one of the easiest and most interesting hiking adventures. You may meet some mountain gorillas, golden monkeys as you hike but if you don’t, just enjoy the scenery.   This is normally a one day hike therefore it can be a great additional activity for some on a gorilla tour in Rwanda.

This kind of activity is most favourable during the dry months of the year since hiking is not that easy when the forest floor is wet and slippery.

Transfer back to Kigali after.

What you need to carry along when heading out for the hike.

  • You will need rain jacket since it can rain any time during the hike.
  • You will need hiking boots
  • You need a back pack to carry your lunch, some drinks and anything else you may need to use during the hike.
  • You may need sunscreen, insect repellents and have to wear trousers and long sleeved shirt to protect yourself as the forest has its treacherous side.
